For much of 2013 and 2014 we were busy designing a comprehensive graphics, signage and wayfinding system for the new $120m Sustainable Industries Education Centre (SIEC). The SIEC project reuses the abandoned Mitsubishi automotive assembly plant in Adelaide’s south, and is home to the new super TAFE campus that brings all construction trades under one (huge) roof. Our signage system allows students, staff and visitors to navigate five buildings across four levels and open workshops — some 45,000m2 in total. The architectural intent was to create a building that in itself is a learning tool for the students. Hence all construction methods and services are on display in the finished buildings. Our signage system followed suit, with perforated faces giving a sense of transparency and producing dazzling moire effects as the viewer moved around them.
